Submit an abstract for ESRA 2025

European Social Survey (ESS) data users are being encouraged to submit research to a range of sessions being held at the 2025 European Survey Research Association (ESRA) Conference.

The call for abstracts is currently open for anyone who wishes to be considered as a speaker at the conference due to be held at Utrecht University, The Netherlands, from 14-18 July 2025.

Abstracts can be submitted to a number of sessions on a wide range of topics related to survey methods or analysis of survey data by Monday 6 January 2025.

Many of the sessions that have been accepted for the conference are being organised by those involved in the ESS.

Several sessions will showcase research around the move away from face-to-face interviews to new modes of data collection such as self-completion.

Data collection modes

Adapting survey mode in a changing survey landscape is looking for submissions from those involved in moving repeat, cross-sectional and cross-national social surveys to new data collection modes.

Exploring non-respondents in self-completion surveys will explore evidence of non-participation in self-completion surveys and discuss ways to improve response rates and/or mitigate non-response bias.

Satisficing in self-completion modes: theoretical understanding, assessment, prevention and consequences for data quality invites research that seeks to understand and prevent undesired respondent behaviour in reducing measurement error and increasing data quality.

Video interviewing for survey data collection: beyond the pandemic will examine research that compares video interviewing with other data collection modes.

Respondent selection methods

Methods for within-household selection in surveys without field interviewers aims to investigate the impact of participant selection within households. Submissions can focus on the success or accuracy of within-household selection methods; comparisons of alternative approaches, including between interviewer-led and self-administration surveys; or new methods for respondent selection.

Using central management strategies and workflows in large-scale surveys to reduce total survey error and implement methodological changes aims to provide insights into how to successfully manage methodological and operational changes to minimise total survey error and biases.

Substantive data analysis

Bridging ESS and EVS to study social attitudes, norms and values across Europe invites papers that adopt the combined use of ESS and European Values Study data in the comparative study of values and attitudes.

Generational perspectives on key NextGenerationEU themes will showcase analysis of survey data on the five themes of the NextGenerationEU recovery plan: digital, equal, green, healthy and strong.

Studying attitudes toward immigrants will feature researchers who use survey data and employ variable-oriented or typological approaches to explain attitudes toward immigrants and refugees.

The social impact of the green transition: measures, methods, and tools will explore how different survey projects, including the ESS, enhance the collection of environmental data.

Translation

Questionnaire translation in a changing world: challenges and opportunities will address various aspects of questionnaire translation, including aspects related to digital innovations.

Other sessions of interest

Evaluating applications of generative artificial intelligence in questionnaire design, evaluation and testing encourages submissions from researchers who are evaluating and validating alternative Gen-AI models.

A session – Web probing – invites presentations with a substantive application of web probing and research that addresses some of the methodological challenges and considerations of web probing.
