The ESS Cumulative Data Wizard, where users can customise their own subsets of data in different formats, will be updated with all seven rounds of the ESS within the next ten days.

ESS7 (e2.0): Error in B10 (PRTVTFNL) and B18b (PRTCLENL) for the Netherlands

Four political parties have been assigned incorrect numerical values in the Dutch political party variables.

Four political parties have been assigned incorrect numerical values in the Dutch political party variables. As a consequence, the parties listed in the labels are incorrect for the following parties:

   Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA)
   Socialist Party (SP)
   Christian Union (CU)
   Green Left (GL)

The issue will be corrected in future editions of ESS7. See below for suggested temporary solution to the problem, based on a recoding of edition 2.0 of the ESS7 Integrated file in SPSS (in this example, stored locally in folder "ESS" on the C: drive):

A new edition of ESS7 integrated sample design data file (1.1) is now available for download in the ESS7 - 2014 Data Download section.

The new release is due to amendments made in variable PSU for Denmark and in variable PROB for Switzerland.

ESS7 1st edition of Media claims released

Edition 1.0 of the ESS7 Media claims data was published on the 29th of July 2016.

The first edition includes media claims for a total of 21 countries, including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

ESS7 Integrated sample design data file (SDDF) available (edition 1.0)

An integrated sample design data file (SDDF) was published 26th of July 2016 and is available in SAS, STATA and SPSS format, along with a PDF file describing the structure and use of the SDDF.

The file is available from the ESS7 - 2014 Data download section and edition 1.0 includes the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Czech, Republic, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, United Kingdom, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and Slovenia.

ESS7 Corrected F61 (ANCTRY1 and ANCTRY2) variables available

A file with corrected ANCTRY1 and ANCTRY2 variables has now been made available from the ESS7 Data Download page.

A file with corrected ANCTRY1 and ANCTRY2 variables has now been made available from the ESS7 Data Download page. In addition to correcting the previously alerted error in the Finnish ANCTRY1 and ANCTRY2 variables, corrections in ANCTRY1 and ANCTRY2 have been made for the following countries:
Denmark (ANCTRY1: 52 cases, ANCTRY2: 33 cases)
Germany (ANCTRY1: 2 cases, ANCTRY2: 1 case)
Ireland (ANCTRY1: 5 cases, ANCTRY2: 9 cases)
Norway (ANCTRY1: 54 cases, ANCTRY2: 18 cases)
Switzerland (ANCTRY1: 81 cases, ANCTRY2: 198 cases)

The variables will be corrected in future updates of the integrated ESS7 data file. In the meantime, we advise our users to update the data by replacing ANCTRY1 and ANCTRY2 in the ESS7 - integrated file, edition 2.0 with ANCTRY1 and ANCTRY2 in ESS7 - ancestry variables (ANCTRY1 ANCTRY2), edition 1.0 (for SPSS syntax example, see below. In this example, note that the data files are stored locally in folder "ESS" on the C: drive):

ESS7 Error in F61 (ANCTRY1 and ANCTRY2) for Finland

All respondents reporting category 12020 (Finnish speaking Finns) on ANCTRY1 (1901 cases) and ANCTRY2 (8 cases) have erroneously been coded to 12021 (Swedish speaking Finns) on these variables.

This will be corrected in future editions of the integrated file. A file containing corrected variables will be made available shortly.

ESS7 New edition (2.1) of test data

A new edition of ESS7 test data (2.1) is now available for download in the ESS7.

Version 2.0 of the ESS7 test data contains duplicate records for all French respondents. These have been removed in edition 2.1.

ESS7 Errors in E7 (ALCWKDY) and E8 (ALCWKND) for Israel

A substantial number of respondents (N=336 [ALCWKDY] and N=81 [ALCWKND]) were erroneously assigned missing values rather than substantial code 0 on the harmonised alcohol consumption variables for Israel in the main data file.

The correct Israeli data for these two variables is available in the integrated alcohol consumption data file. The variables for Israel will be corrected in future updates of the integrated ESS7 data file.
