ESS7 Errors in E7 (ALCWKDY) and E8 (ALCWKND) for Norway

A small number of respondents (N=6 [ALCWKDY] and N=3 [ALCWKND]) were assigned wrong missing values (9999 rather than 8888) on the harmonised alcohol consumption variables for Norway in the main data file.

A small number of respondents (N=6 [ALCWKDY] and N=3 [ALCWKND]) were assigned wrong missing values (9999 rather than 8888) on the harmonised alcohol consumption variables for Norway in the main data file. The correct Norwegian data for these two variables is available in the integrated alcohol consumption data file. The variables for Norway will be corrected in future updates of the integrated ESS7 data file. In the meantime, we advise our users to update the data by replacing ALCWKDY and ALCWKND in the ESS7 - integrated file, edition 2.0 with ALCWKDY and ALCWKND in ESS7 - alcohol consumption variables, edition 2.0 (for SPSS syntax example, see below. In this example, note that the data files are stored locally in folder "ESS" on the C: drive):

GET FILE "C:\ESS\ESS7e02.sav" /DROP alcwkdy alcwknd.
MATCH FILES
/FILE=*
/FILE="C:\ESS\ESS7ALCe02.sav"
/BY cntry idno.
EXE.
SAVE OUT "C:\ESS\ESS7e02_Update.sav" /DROP e7_nd to e8_10si.

ESS1/ESS7 Translation error in Austria (D10 IMDETBS/D11 IMDETMR)

A serious translation error has been detected in the Austrian translations in round 1 and round 7 related to variables IMDETBS (D36 in ESS1/D10 in ESS7) and IMDETMR (D37 in ESS1/D11 in ESS7).

A serious translation error has been detected in the Austrian translations in round 1 and round 7 related to variables IMDETBS (D36 in ESS1/D10 in ESS7) and IMDETMR (D37 in ESS1/D11 in ESS7).

The phrase "different race or ethnic group" was translated as "the same race or ethnic group", leading to the Austrian translation meaning exactly the opposite from the intention in the source text. Also, in ESS7, the underlining in the Austrian version refers to "another country" and not to "different race and ethnic group".

The Austrian version of the variables will be removed from future releases of the integrated ESS1 and ESS7 data and published in country-specific Austrian data files.

ESS7 Error in MBTRU (F39) for Czech Republic

The variable MBTRU (F39, "Member of trade union or similar organisation") for the Czech Republic in ESS7-2014 is incorrectly coded.

The variable MBTRU (F39, "Member of trade union or similar organisation") for the Czech Republic in ESS7-2014 is incorrectly coded. Respondents in the category 3 ("No") have been erroneously coded as 8 ("Don't know"), while respondents in the category 8 have been coded as 7 ("Refusal"). The variable will be corrected in future updates of the integrated ESS7 data file. See below for suggested temporary solution to the problem.

SPSS:
do if (cntry="CZ").
recode mbtru (8 = 3) (7 = 8).
end if.

Stata:
recode mbtru (8 .c = 3) (7 .b = .c) if cntry == "CZ"

SAS:
if cntry= "CZ" then do;
    if mbtru = 8 then mbtru = 3;
    else if mbtru = 7 then mbtru = 8;
end;
